Woore Primary and Nursery School – Safer School award
Following the continual success of the Safer Schools scheme across Shropshire, Woore Primary and Nursery School has received their accreditation. Over the last few years the school has been working through the scheme in partnership with Shropshire Council and West Mercia Police. In recognition of the award two years ago, Shropshire Council Chairman, Ann Hartley and the Director of Children’s Services, Karen Bradshaw, presented a certificate and Safer School sign to the school during an assembly. As part of the presentation ceremony, Councillor Hartley asked the pupils some safety questions and confidently, they successfully rose to the challenge. Ian Bartlett, Crime Prevention Officer, commented “The Safer School scheme illustrates a school’s responsible approach towards ensuring a safer and more secure environment for its pupils, staff and visitors. It involves establishing a Safer School Group consisting of the head teacher, staff, governors, Shropshire Council, the Police and importantly, pupils. This group meets to review issues, hear any concerns and ensure essential standards are being implemented. In the past schools didn’t consult or inform parents/carers about their school approach to security/safety. The working together is vital for obtaining different views/perspectives. Parents/carers are kept informed of Safer School progress through newsletters”. The scheme is set to continue here at Woore Primary and Nursery School. This will maintain our Safer School accreditation when it’s reviewed every two years.
Update February 2018
Statement from Ian Bartlett (Safer Schools Representative, Shropshire Council)
The involvement of Woore Primary and Nursery School in the ‘Safer Schools’ initiative is first class!! The school recently held its annual ‘Safer School Group’ meeting, attended by staff, governors, Shropshire Council and most importantly, pupils. The Police normally attend but had to attend an emergency on this occasion. A thorough meeting, covering all aspects of the Safer Schools process. This includes reviewing security/safety, consultation with parents/carers/pupils, reflecting on any school issues and planning for the future. It was a really positive meeting with good contribution by all those present. Excellent work!
Update February 2019
Statement from Ian Bartlett (Safer Schools Representative, Shropshire Council)
‘Safer Schools’
Another year and another successful ‘Safer School Group’ meeting! This year, the ‘Safer School Group’ reviewed security/safety, analysed the parent/carer and pupil surveys, considered any school issues and planned for the future. It was a really positive meeting and reassuringly, there had been no recorded incidents at the school since the last meeting in 2018. The results of both the parent/carer and pupils surveys were exceptionally good too. The pupils played an important part in the meeting and their contribution illustrated the school’s hard work in maintaining the ‘Safer School’ accreditation. A future meeting is planned for 2020 to update the school’s involvement. Overall, excellent work by Mrs Ward, governors, staff and pupils.

Update October 2021
Congratulations to Woore Primary and Nursery School on maintaining their Safer School accreditation. The school was accredited a Safer School in 2016 and recently Mrs Ward held a Safer School meeting to update the school’s involvement in the security/safety initiative. The partial virtual meeting was well attended by staff, pupils, a governor, a school neighbour, the Police and myself representing Shropshire Council. We reviewed security/safety measures, updated the action plan and reviewed the incident reporting process. Fortunately, there had been no incidents since 2019 – excellent news. An essential element of this initiative involves communication and the school achieves this by holding an annual Safer School meeting, parent/carer surveys and newsletters. The survey results from the parents/carers and pupils were particularly reassuring. The meeting concluded with the school receiving a new Safer School certificate and a future meeting will be held in autumn 2022.

Update November 2022
We made it again! We have successfully maintained the Safer School accreditaion for the 2021-22 academic year! This meeting was held in school by staff, pupils, a governor and the police and Ian Bartlett (Crime Prevention Officer) from Shropshire Council. We reviewed security/safety measures along with the incident reporting documentation. We have received no reports of crime this year. We also looked at the views of parents/carers and the children in the Safer School process. Results from both of the questionnaires were very reassuring. We will continue to keep our school safe and look forward to our Safer School's meeting again next year.
Update December 2023
Safer Schools
Woore Primary and Nursery School has maintained the Safer School accreditation that the school achieved in 2016. Safer Schools is a risk management approach to school security, created by West Mercia Police and supported/promoted by Shropshire Council. Mrs Ward recently held an annual Safer School review meeting involving staff and pupils. As previous years, the meeting was a thorough review and included feedback from parents/carers and pupils. Excellent feedback from the Safer School survey that’s appreciated by Mrs Ward, staff and governors. During the meeting, a security/safety advice sheet was updated and since the previous meeting, included in the advice sheet, a smart new bin store has been built in the school car park. The meeting concluded with the school being presented with an updated certificate and a future review is planned for Autumn 2024. The school is an excellent example of a school involved in Safer Schools.
