Green Flag Eco Award
Pupils at Woore Primary and Nursery School awarded a coveted Eco-Schools Green Flag.
Pupils at Woore Primary and Nursery School have earned an international accreditation this academic year, recognising their amazing work in making their school and nursery more environmentally friendly and raising eco-awareness in fellow pupils.
Eco-Schools is an international education programme that prompts young people to explore sustainability and climate change and take action.
Pupils at Woore Primary and Nursery School collaborated with Miss Holland to conduct an environmental review, assessing how eco-friendly their school is. They reviewed everything from the school’s recycling practices, to energy usage, to how environmental themes are covered in classrooms. Building on their findings, the pupils and Miss Holland planned a year of activities that would up their green-credentials.
The group connected their work to 3 Eco-Schools topics: Waste, School Grounds and Litter
Activities included a recycling assembly and workshop from ‘Pass it on’ Campaign, creating and protecting our new wildflower meadow with the help of Gardening club. Raising the awareness of litter through taking part in the Keep Britain Tidy Big Clean up week.
Miss Holland said “We had a small but extremely dedicated group of children, which lead by example in highlighting issues they wanted to be raised. Many of the group, not only helped to raise the profile of environmental issues within school, but also at home and in their local environments too. We are looking forward to developing the 3 R’s (Reduce, Reuse and Recycle) further in our school. We aim to be more aware of climate and conservation problems that are happening across the Earth.”
Two of our Eco-schools group, Olly Davies-Owen and Olivia Cannings stated “ We dedicated our Friday lunch time to help our school be an environmentally friendly place. Here are some of the things we have done: made an eco-suggestion box, made hedgehog homes, created recycled bird feeders and organised a litter-picking team. We feel that Woore School is a more environmentally stable place. We will try to maintain our achievements over the coming year.”
Eco-Schools England Manager, Adam Flint, said: “Earning an Eco-Schools Green Flag Award takes passion, commitment and a desire to make a difference. Pupils should be proud of their great work. They’re an inspiration and it makes us feel heartened and positive about the future of our planet.”
