Little Wandle Parent Workshop and class story time
Date: 27th Sep 2023 @ 11:09am
Last week we invited our parents of children in reception, year 1 and year 2 to a 'Little Wandle Parent Workshop and Class Story time'.
The workshop was an opportunity to share with parents the Little Wandle phonics and early reading programme we use in school. We discussed the reception and year 1 programmes and provided materials with parents which outlines the programme over the two years. We also introduced a new 'Bridge to Spelling' programme for Y2 children and how this is mapped out across the year. In addition to this we shared information on our other programmes we deliver in school for those children who may not be keeping up with the main programmes-The SEND Programme and The Rapid Catch-Up Programme. Some of our children also receive 'Keep up' sessions as an extra boost, this information was also shared with parents.
Another item on our agenda was to explain 'Books coming home'. If your child is on the Little Wandle programme, they will bring a book home which is matched to their phonics ability. These are aimed to be read at 90% accurately by the children to ensure success and improve confidence. We read the same books with the children in school over three sessions weekly, with a different focus each time-Decoding, Comprehension and Prosody. Along with the phonics book, children will bring home a 'book for pleasure'. This is for the parents to read to the child to promote a 'love of reading'.
To end the afternoon, our parents joined their children's class to listen to and join in with story time.
We hope you enjoyed the event and found it helpful!
